LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A 2-year-old girl burned her hands and feet on Saturday after crawling into a fire pit at Dockweiler State Beach still hot from the previous night.

Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguards arrived at Tower 56 of Dockweiler State Beach by 2:30 p.m.

"She started immediately screaming because of the pain and the burns to the hand. The mother picked up her child, grabbed her and pulled her out of the ring and we responded right away," said Kenichi Haskett with Los Angeles County Fire Department lifeguards.

The girl was taken to a hospital with moderate burns on both hands and her right ankle.

Lifeguards warn that coals can remain hot for hours and ask beachgoers not to bury them in the sand as they can still cause burns.
