3.4-magnitude earthquake strikes near Gardena

GARDENA, Calif. (KABC) -- A preliminary magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck about 2 miles north, northeast of Gardena Saturday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit at 9:54 p.m. and had a depth of 7.7 miles. The epicenter was about 2 miles west of Willowbrook and 3 miles east of Hawthorne.

Eyewitness News viewers reported feeling the shaking in Downey, Burbank, South Los Angeles, Koreatown, Compton, Sherman Oaks, downtown Los Angeles and Ladera Heights.

The temblor was the fifth earthquake greater than or equal to 3.0 magnitude near the Newport Inglewood fault in two months, said Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist with U.S. Geological Survey.

Los Angeles firefighters entered into earthquake mode to survey areas for possible damage or injuries. All 106 LAFD neighborhood fire stations were activated in the search.

No damage or injuries were reported.
