Gumball 3000 Rally makes its way to downtown Los Angeles

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Gumball Rally, an annual British 3,000-mile international motor rally, made its way from Europe to downtown Los Angeles Thursday night.

More than $100 million worth of fast and flashy cars were on display for car lovers to admire and photograph at the 17th annual event.

Some celebrities such as Deadmau5 and Tommy Lee arrived in matching McLarens. The rally's founder Max Cooper arrived in a $2 million Pagani, a rare Italian hypercar.

"I really am trying to just get the most incredible mix of everything: mix of people, mix of nationalities, mix of backgrounds, walks of life, and obviously a mix of vehicles. You've got vintage cars, classic cars," he said.

The Gumball 3000 Foundation is a charity that benefits disadvantaged youth. The project funds educational programs around the globe. Another part of the event includes charity auctions, which benefits organizations such as the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and the Tony Hawk Foundation.

The rally started earlier this week in Sweden, where it cruised through Norway, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands before arriving in the U.S.

The high-priced cars were flown to Reno, Nevada, where they were paraded through the town. The drivers made their way to Southern California on the south I-5. Among those along for the ride was actor Dolph Lundgren, who said he has avoided getting a speeding ticket.

Each year the rally incorporates different cities, and car enthusiasts are thrilled that Los Angeles was on this year's route.

"It's pretty amazing, I mean the amount of money worked into all of these cars I think is just incredible. You know, to be able to own one would probably be a dream come true," resident Louie Cristales said.

The cars remained on display until about 10 a.m. Friday. They will then depart to Las Vegas through Death Valley.
