800th Habitat for Humanity home going up in LA

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- 800 and still counting. There was sawing and hammering and raising walls as the Los Angeles chapter of Habitat for Humanity got going on its 800th house Wednesday.

"So we're currently in the middle of our five-year 'Building a Greater Los Angeles' campaign where our goal is to invest $100 million into building, rehabilitating and repairing homes throughout greater Los Angeles," said a Habitat representative.

The high-flying volunteers all came from Delta Airlines. This is the seventh house they've built.

And they couldn't have done it without you, but you probably didn't know that.

"One thing that's really unique about this year's build is, it is funded entirely with the deposits from recycled cans that our flight attendants collect on Delta flights throughout the year. So the next time you're on a Delta flight, have a Coke and make sure you give it back to the flight attendant because you will help build a Habitat house the following year with that money."

All this time, effort and money goes to one goal. Today it was seeing mother of four Denise Harris have her dream come true.

"What brought me into becoming a homeowner is, it's always been a dream to actually leave something behind to my children," said Harris.

In six weeks, Harris will have a lot more room to raise her four kids as this house becomes a home.
