HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) -- Authorities say a driver who struck and killed a Hesperia family on their way to Disneyland last month had prescription drugs in his system at the time of the crash.

Investigators believe Joshua Smith, 30, lost consciousness just prior to the crash at the intersection of Main Street and Balsam Avenue on May 11.

Detectives say Smith's van was heading eastbound when it crossed over into westbound lanes. The van hit the family's Honda sedan while they were stopped at a stop sign. The force of the impact flipped the van on top of their car.

Gerardo Cruz Jimenez, 30, and Angelica Garcia, 25, were killed in the crash, along with their three young children, 2-year-old Ivan, 3-year-old Cindy and 9-year-old Freddy.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office will now decide if charges will be filed.
