POMONA, Calif. (KABC) -- A program offered by Cal Poly Pomona's Veterans Resource Center gives veterans the chance to heal and relieve stress by grooming and caring for horses.

Horses for Heroes helps reconnect veterans to everyday life by allowing them to build a bond with horses.

U.S. Navy veteran Jonah Aguirre, a student at Cal Poly Pomona, is one of 10 former military service members selected for the program.

Veterans are paired with a horse they take care of each week at the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center.

They say the experience is healing.

"It's kind of nice to be around them," Aguirre said.
