VIDEO: Flight attendant extinguishes small fire on plane

BANGKOK, Thailand -- A small fire on board a KLM flight caused a moment of panic for crew members and passengers on a flight from Amsterdam to Bangkok Sunday.

A passenger recorded this video showing crew members looking for the source of the smoke coming from the overheard compartments. Something is pulled from the overheard bin and placed on a seat. Then a flight attendant puts out the small fire with an extinguisher.

According to DailyMail.com, a passenger said the fire was sparked by a lithium ion battery inside a traveler's bag but the Dutch airline released a statement saying the cause was under investigation.

The fire reportedly started right after the plane landed at Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International Airport.

The KLM spokesman said there was 321 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 777.

He told MailOnline Travel, after the incident "all passengers and crew left the plane safely."

A passenger who goes by the twitter handle @Accone posted a picture on her Twitter account and said, "Well done @KLM for calm management of cabin fire on flight KL875 caused by a battery in passenger's carry-on luggage."

After the incident the KLM spokesperson said the plane would be inspected and would make any necessary repairs.

Most airlines around the world, including KLM Airlines, allow loose lithium ion batteries to be carried only in hand bags with each spare battery stored in the original packaging. If it's not in its original packaging, both battery contact points would have to be taped to insulate them and packed in separate plastic bags.
