Eaton, Palisades fires continue burning as new threat to Brentwood, Mandeville Canyon emerges

An incredible moment was captured on camera, as a woman who just gave birth is seen in her hospital room with the ruby glow from the start of Palisades Fire visible from the window.

Ariel Malmazada gave birth to her son, George, on Jan. 7 at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica.

When Ariel, her son, and her husband, Jordan, moved to their postpartum room, she noticed smoke in the distance. That smoke was the beginning of the Palisades Fire.

Over the next 36 hours they watched as the fire grew.

And though they were supposed to stay at St. John's another night or two, they chose to leave after evacuation warnings grew closer to the hospital.

While all three are now safe at their home in Culver City, they say their family lost three homes in the fire.

AIR7 was above Altadena and Pasadena on Saturday afternoon, taking a block-by-block look at damage from the Eaton Fire.

Using Skymap technology, ABC7's Gabe Santos described the damage.

"People have said it looks like a hurricane, it looks like a tornado came through, it looks like a bomb went off," he said. "Those are all appropriate descriptions as we kind of go down southbound on Fair Oaks Avenue."

A humanitarian team from Mexico, deployed to fight the fires burning in Southern California, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Saturday afternoon.

Gov. Gavin Newsom expressed his gratitude to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, as he welcomed more than 70 Mexican firefighters.

Firefighters stood guard in Brentwood as flames burning in Mandeville Canyon crept closer to the edge of several homes.

"Right now our firefighters are holding the line here, we're the last line of defense to protect these homes," said Fire Captain Adam VanGerpen with the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

VanGerpen explained that crews were using a nearby indoor swimming pool to fight the fire, and also shared that the area is still under a wind advisory.

"You can see from some of the little wind we do have, the embers are coming up," he said. "And if our firefighters weren't here, this house would not do well."

The fire captain also reminded our viewers of the dangers of interfering with his team's firefighting efforts.

"We saw a homeowner down there right in the middle of that, which is a very dangerous situation," VanGerpen said. "I believe we had to take one of our own firefighters, send them down there into harm's way, to evacuate them. We're trying to protect a home, and now we could be moving in to performing a possible rescue."
