Magnitude-7.1 earthquake hits off New Zealand coast

NEW ZEALAND (KABC) -- A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 struck about 100 miles off the east coast of New Zealand's North Island on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of any damage. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii reports that no tsunami of significant strength is expected.

The temblor registered 167 kilometers (104 miles) off the coast in the South Pacific Ocean around 4:37 p.m. UTC at a depth of around 30.7 kilometers (19 miles), USGS reported.

USGS initially reported the quake to be 7.2 but downgraded it to 7.1.

The quake comes a day after a magnitude-5.7 quake registered in the same area, 100 km (62 miles) northeast of Te Araroa on the North Island's east coast.
