BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- An elderly woman was shot during a home invasion robbery in Beverly Hills Friday night. A search remains underway for three suspects.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. on the 400 block of Doheny Road. Police say a resident called and said that he and his wife were bound, beaten, gagged and robbed. He told police his wife was shot in the leg.

"Three suspects made contact with the victim by knocking on the front door, forced their way into the residence and tied up the victims and subsequently took property and fled from the location," said Lt. Lincoln Hoshino with the Beverly Hills Police Department, adding that at least one of the suspects brandished a handgun.

The suspects took undetermined property and fled via the front door eastbound on Doheny Road, Hoshino said. That's when the male resident was able to untie himself and call police, who then responded in about two minutes.

The woman, who is in her late 70s, was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The husband was also taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

Authorities say the three male suspects were wearing face masks. Police set up a perimeter and conducted a search in the upscale neighborhood with the assistance of the Santa Monica Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, but no suspects were located.

A family friend told Eyewitness News that the couple usually hosts a prayer group Friday and Saturday nights, and could have mistaken the intruders as men wanting to participate in the service.

"These are some of the finest people I've ever known. They're extremely charitable, extremely religious. They have a big family," Samuel Storm of Beverly Hills said.

The investigation into what police are calling an isolated incident continued Saturday. Anyone with any information regarding the robbery was urged to contact Beverly Hills police detectives at (310) 550-4951.
