HAWTHORNE, Calif. (KABC) -- Two toddlers fell from a second-story window in an unincorporated area of Hawthorne on Tuesday.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. near South Ocean Gate Avenue and West El Segundo Boulevard.

The boys, who are part of a set of triplets, were transported to an area hospital with injuries. Los Angeles County fire officials said one child hit his head and was listed in critical condition. The other boy landed on his rear end and was listed in moderate condition.

The third brother was not hurt. He slept through the entire incident.

Two toddlers were rushed to the hospital after falling from a second-story window in unincorporated Hawthorne on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2014.

Family members say the 2-year-old boys were supposed to be taking a nap on their parents' queen bed. The bed appeared to be close to the window, which was covered by a screen.

Family members say the boys had been playing with a ball recently and shattered the window. Their father, Leonard Jimenez, says he removed the shards of glass so they would not cut themselves, but the second-story window had not been replaced. Officials say the boys may have climbed through the blinds.

Jimenez, who was in another room, ran to his children when he realized what happened.

"He was up walking around and I grabbed him. Well my wife grabbed him, but then I grabbed him from her and then I held him," Jimenez said. "I know I wasn't supposed to touch him because he fell, but I didn't know what else to do but grab him. The one that was knocked out, that's the one I was worried about. He's fine. He just has a contusion on his liver."

Authorities said the Special Victims Bureau and the Department of Children Services were alerted to the incident.
