Orlando shooting hits close to home for many in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- The shooting in Orlando has brought back painful memories for those in San Bernardino.

At the memorial for the San Bernardino terror victims, a rainbow flag was hung in solidarity. Family members of the San Bernardino victims showed their support and also expressed their sadness for those in Orlando.

"I have a gay son and I live here in San Bernardino and it happened to us," Beth-Ann Vasquez said.

"This tragic event has brought back painful memories...we know what those poor families and loved ones of the victims are going through," the father of Yvette Velasco, a victim of the San Bernardino terrorist attack said

The San Bernardino Police Department said it sympathizes with what police in Orlando dealt with at the Pulse nightclub.

"They're going to deal with this and process what they saw and what they experienced that day, not just the folks that were there, but everybody within that organization. As a chief it's kind of your responsibility, you got to watch out for everybody," San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

The San Bernardino County Department of Public Health, where San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook worked and whose employees were killed, tweeted a message of support for the community of Orlando.

"We have several employees that are still hurting and hurting even more now because of this," Claudia Doyle of the San Bernardino Country Department of Public Health said.
