A deputy opened fire on a murder suspect after an undercover gang unit tried to take him into custody in La Mirada.

LA MIRADA, Calif. (KABC) -- An undercover gang unit with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was involved in a shooting at a motel parking lot in La Mirada Tuesday.

Authorities say the undercover unit was tracking a wanted murder suspect in the area of Firestone Boulevard and Trojan Way. When they tried to take him into custody, a deputy-involved shooting happened.

According to a source, the suspect was holding a gun in his hand.

AIR7 aerial footage showed evidence markers for multiple bullets that had been fired, and a number of vehicles were seen with bullet holes.

The male suspect was not hit by gunfire, but was injured by flying glass, the sheriff's department said. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

No deputies were injured in the incident.
