Evacuation orders, warnings issued as fast-moving brush fire shuts down 5 Freeway in Gorman

GORMAN, Calif. (KABC) -- Fire crews are battling a fast-moving brush fire in Gorman near the Los Angeles County-Kern County line, triggering evacuation orders and warnings for some residents and a freeway closure.

The estimated 100-acre Ridge Fire is burning on W. Gorman Post Road, according to the L.A. County Fire Department. It was first reported just after 3 p.m. Friday.

Fire officials say the fire is rapidly spreading down the hill and toward the 5 Freeway. California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, closing all northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway between Smokey Bear Road and SR-138.

Not long after the first SigAlert was issued, the fire jumped to the other side of the 5 Freeway with winds in the area. A second SigAlert was issued, closing all southbound lanes between Frazier Mountain Park Road and Smokey Bear Road.

L.A. County issued an evacuation order for residents in zone GOR-HUNGRYVALLEY-A. Evacuation warnings were issued for zones GOR-E001-A and GOR-HUNGRYVALLEY-B.

Kern County also issued an evacuation warning for zone KRN-545. Residents in the area are being asked to prepare to leave.
