Sand Fire: Latest evacuations, road closures, shelter sites

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (KABC) -- Here are the latest updates on evacuation areas, road closures and shelter locations for the Sand Fire in Santa Clarita.

Officials announced all residents in evacuated areas would be allowed to return home at 7 p.m., with the exception of those located on Placerita Canyon Road from Running Horse Lane to Pacy Street, and Little Tujunga Canyon Road from the Wildlife Way Station to Sand Canyon Road & Placerita Canyon Road.

Authorities said all residents entering the area will need to provide identification and also urged those who do not need to return home immediately to wait until later in the evening to help with traffic congestion.

Officials with the county sheriff and fire departments said the evacuations encompassed about 10,000 homes. In addition, 200 commercial buildings were threatened by the flames. More than 2,900 firefighting personnel were fighting the flames.

Eighteen homes were destroyed and one other home incurred damage in the fire.

Here are the latest details on evacuations, shelters and road closures, from the county sheriff and fire departments:

ROAD CLOSURES:

-- Sand Canyon and Soledad Canyon - no entry into Sand Canyon.

-- Little Tujunga at Osborne.

-- No access to Sand Canyon at northbound 14 Freeway.

-- Sand Canyon and Lost Canyon - no traffic into Sand Canyon.

-- Placerita Canyon and the 14 Freeway - no traffic into Placerita Canyon.

-- 14 Freeway northbound to Ward Road.

-- Soledad Canyon Road eastbound from the 14 Freeway.

-- Agua Dulce Canyon Road eastbound from the 14 Freeway.

-- Crown Valley Road eastbound from the 14 Freeway.

-- Sand Canyon Road east of Placerita Canyon to 12300 Little Tujunga.

-- Crown Valley at Escondido.

-- Escondido east of the 14 Freeway.

METROLINK CLOSURES:

-- There will be no Metrolink service to or from the Vincent Grade/Acton, Palmdale or Lancaster stations on Tuesday. Metrolink trains will only operate between the Via Princessa Station and Los Angeles Union Station.

EVACUATIONS:

- All residents along Placerita Canyon Road from Running Horse Lane to Pacy Street.

- All residents along Little Tujunga Canyon Road from the Wildlife Way Station to Sand Canyon Road and Placerita Canyon Road.

EVACUATION CENTERS:

--Highland High School, 39055 25th St. W, Palmdale.

--Hart High School, 24825 N. Newhall, Santa Clarita.

--Lake View Terrace Recreation Center, 11075 Foothill Blvd, Lake View Terrace.

-- The evacuation center at Golden Valley High School has been closed.
