SEAL BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Medicare advantage program Caremore covers the cost of electric Pedego bikes so seniors can participate in free coastal rides throughout Seal Beach.
Ballard co-owns the bike shop with Beth Black. He's a Type 1 diabetic, and she has arthritis. Both realize the importance of staying active so they offer Silver Spin for seniors each week to get people motivated.
"We have customers that don't own a bike. They come here every Tuesday. No cost, no commitment, no strings attached - we just want them to have fun," said Brian Ballard, co-owner of Pedego of Greater Long Beach.
Silver Spin is sponsored by Caremore a medicare advantage program that covers the cost of the rentals.
The bikes pedal like standard bikes but the motor can assist up to 30 miles - which some use when things get tough.
Those who don't feel they are athletic enough for a standard bike have found they've lost weight and increased strength gains.
"They're very sociable. They love to gather. They're out of the house, they're having fun, and they're riding together," said Black.
Darlene Smith, of Westminster, bought her own but comes for the camaraderie.
"I have arthritis in both knees and need to have them replaced, and I have a bad back. But even if I can't walk, I can ride this Pedego," said Smith.
Bike riding is such a great way to help you lower your blood pressure control, your diabetes and your weight. One of the best things for this group is socialization.
While they are in the business of selling electric bikes, the company offers all kinds of bike tours.
Beyond Silver Spin, bikes rent for $14 an hour or $50 for the day.
