SNAKE RIVER CANYON, Idaho (KABC) -- A Southern California stuntman jumped over a canyon in a custom-built rocket and lived to tell the tale.

Multiple cameras captured the death-defying feat as 54-year-old Eddie Braun blasted off in the Evel Spirit over the Snake River Canyon in Idaho on Friday.

Video from New Atlas shows the Evel Spirit soaring through the air before Braun parachuted out safely as his supporters cheered.

"When I realized I was actually going to live, I was like, 'OK, we got this," Braun explained.

Braun did his jump over the same canyon that Evel Knievel attempted to jump in 1974, but Knievel's parachute deployed early.

"I couldn't think of a more fitting way to finish out my career, paying homage to the man that inspired me professionally," Braun said.
