DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Thousands of pairs of shoes and school supplies were given away to kids in need Thursday at the 26th annual Back to School Giveaway at Fred Jordan Missions.
Families began lining up for the event as early as 4 a.m.
Organizers say for many of these children, it's the first brand new pair of shoes they've ever had and the first time they've been sized for the perfect fit.
Alejandro Silva said it's a pretty neat feeling.
"It's actually like a dream come true. I actually get to meet new people and get new shoes for free," said Silva.
The event is a partnership between Fred Jordan Missions and Foot Locker. The giveaway has served 130,000 kids since it launched 26 years ago.
Along with the new shoes, the children walked away with free clothing, school supplies, backpacks, personal hygiene kits and even haircuts. In-N-Out also stopped by, cooking up fresh hamburgers for the kids and their parents.
Willie Jordan's husband started the Mission in 1944.
"It makes you feel good to be part of the city of Los Angeles - the city that cares," said Jordan.
Jordan said not having shoes is an issue she dealt with as a child growing up in Los Angeles.
"I went to school and the teacher looked down and pointed at my bare feet and she said, 'Willie Lou, where are your shoes?'" Jordan recalled.
The event, which is held in one of the neediest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, grows stronger each year.
