New photos show close-up of Comet Hartley 2

November 4, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
New photos, taken by JPL's Deep Impact spacecraft, show a close-up look at a comet in outer space. Comet Hartley 2 is 1.36 miles across. The probe flew through the comet's diffuse corona at about 27,000 miles an hour and came within 435 miles of its icy, dirty core.

This was only the fifth time in history that a spacecraft came close enough to view a comet's core.
