OC mission steps in to help fretful homeless

TUSTIN, Calif.

Police say three homeless men have been murdered in the northern side of the county since Dec. 21.

The mission is distributing emergency kits that contain flashlights, whistles and safety tips.

The mission is also encouraging the homeless to get into shelters or sleep in groups and stay aware.

"I think that's the first precaution, is get off of the street," said Jim Palmer, president of the Orange County Rescue Mission. "Through the shelter in Santa Ana and in Fullerton, there's an opportunity right now. Once those become full, we're going to have to look for more opportunities and hopefully churches will open up and cities will open up opportunities that we can partner with."

Thanks to donations, the mission is going to assemble another 1,000 emergency kits and they hope to start distributing them as early as Monday.

The mission is at 1 Hope Drive in Tustin.
