Food bank receives assist from hunters

Never underestimate the generosity of Mid-Michigan hunters
MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) We are over halfway through this year's deer season, and there is no better way to gauge its success than to talk to some deer processors.  Bill Thomas from Mark Thomas Deer Processing in Richfield Township had some information for us.

"We started out a little slow this year and of course the warm weather wasn't good, but now that it turned cold, it has picked up," he said.  "And we are right on track where we were last year."

With the support of the Flint Safari Club, Mark Thomas Deer Processing is one of the main collection sites for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.

"When hunters come in, we ask them if they would like to donate a pound of burger," Thomas said.  "Of course everybody is generous.  Also, if you have more deer meat then you know what to do with, we say if you want just your backstraps, we will process the deer for nothing and grind the rest for the food bank."

Around 50 whole deer have been donated to the food bank already this year.  The Food Bank council of Michigan says that last year, hunters donated 34,000 pounds of venison to state food banks.
