Current airfare sales bring good bargains

March 23, 2010 12:00:00 AM PDT
A new round of airfare sales means good bargains as you plan your next trip. But you have to be flexible with when and where you travel. And you need to factor in airline fees.In this economy many travelers are trying to save by spending a lot of time and effort trying to get the best air fare they can.

But right now you may not have to work that hard to find good prices because several discount airlines are offering what looks like some pretty good air fares.

AirTran Airways has a roundtrip fare between Los Angeles and New York of $188. Frontier Airlines is offering fares as low as $98 round-trip between Long Beach and Denver. And JetBlue Airways is advertising $58 roundtrips from Long Beach to San Francisco or Oakland.

Now those air fares sound pretty good. But a travel agency in Studio City said there are a few restrictions you should know about.

"You've got to be flexible. You have very limited travel days," said travel consultant Patrik Olson.

That's right, flexibility is key because the cheapest seats are only available for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. But even if you are flexible, remember these air fares are just the base price the airlines are quoting you.

"They are going to pay all the taxes, all the fuel surcharges, just to get the ticket, and of course they're going to pay for checked baggage," said Olson. "So that $78 trip isn't a $78 trip."

Another problem with the fares above is they end this week, and who knows when the next round of airfare sales will come?
