Eight of the nine are in custody with Joshua Stone currently a fugitive.
The indictment states that the elder Stone planned to use explosive devices to kill a law enforcement officer and then kill additional officers who would attend the slain officer's funeral.
Close to home, roads in Adrian were shut down and only officials were allowed to pass through. A mobile home section in Adrian, Michigan near Tomer Road is at the center of the investigation. Neighbors say Stone and his two sons lived on the land and were known Hutaree militia members, which means they don't believe in government law, only God's law.
Several residents say they knew the family and never suspected anything out of the ordinary, but now many of them are on edge.
"I've always felt safe here. But if something like this is going on", says resident Jerry Posey, "we're not safe anywhere apparently."
"I've raised my kids in this town. We never used to have to worry about people," Jane Posey says.
After learning of the raid on the Hutaree militia group, we looked deeper into the organization to see what it's about.
According to a variety of websites, the Hutaree militia members consider themselves soldiers getting ready for a battle with the anti-Christ. Mike Lackomar, a member of a different, far tamer militia in Michigan, says the Hutaree see themselves engaging in a biblical mission.
"We're in the last days as prophesized in the Bible. What's going to happen from here on out is the world's going to fall apart, everything's going to crash and burn, Jesus is going to return and we're going to have to assist him to build God's kingdom in what used to be the U.S. of A."
We found a video on YouTube (Click here to watch) of the militia in training, presumably in Lenawee County where they are based.
In the video they are heavily armed, conducting mock raids, seizing a United Nations flag and replacing it with their own flag which has a cross with the initials CCR, which stands for Colonial Christian Republic, on it.
"They were very closed. They kept to themselves. Probably the only people that were in actual danger where the poor law enforcement officials who had to serve these warrants."
We want to emphasize that Mike Lackomar is part of a militia group that is more civil defense in nature. They train and respond to things such as natural disasters.
Mike estimates there are about a dozen members of the Hutaree in Michigan and they have been active for about five years.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Nine suspects tied to a Christian militia in the Midwest are charged with conspiring to kill police officers, then attack a funeral in the hopes of killing more law enforcement people, federal prosecutors said Monday.
Members of the group called Hutaree are charged in the case, including their leader, David Brian Stone.
Once other officers gathered for the slain officer's funeral, the group planned to detonate homemade bombs at the funeral, killing more, according to newly unsealed court papers.
The charges follow FBI raids over the weekend on locations in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.
According to investigators, the Hutaree view local, state, and federal law enforcement personnel as a "brotherhood" and an enemy, and planned to attack them as part of an armed struggle against the U.S. government.
Eight suspects have been arrested by the FBI, and one more is being sought.
Andrew Arena, head of the FBI's field office in Detroit, said the case "is an example of radical and extremist fringe groups which can be found throughout our society. The FBI takes such extremist groups seriously, especially those who would target innocent citizens and the law enforcement officers who protect the citizens of the United States."
