WCRZ-FM off the air after fire

BURTON WCRZ-FM employee Erin Bishop said the power in the station went off shortly after she arrived. When she went outside, she saw flames 15-25 feet above the building.

Bishop called 911 and Burton fire crews quickly put out the fire.

The cause of the fire appears to be a natural gas leak near the station. Crews from Consumers Energy are checking a gas main toward the rear of the building where the fire is believed to have started.

WCRZ is off the air, as is Banana 101 and WFNT-AM. Other affected stations are Club 93.7, US103 and WLCD. Most, with the exception of WFNT, should be back on the air with at least music by noon today (Wednesday).

There is little fire damage to the interior of the building, but there is smoke damage.

An employee said the station had been running on a backup generator after power went out Tuesday. He suspects the generator, which operates on natural gas, may have played a role in the fire. p>Burton Fire Chief Doug Halstead says they've discovered other problems. "We've still got gas leaking and we have some sort of electrical circuitry that is still smoldering. We don't know what's causing it to smolder, but we can't put it out."

General Manager Zoe Burdine-Fly says her staff is trying to set up for broadcast from the transmitter location to get some programming back on the air.
