Governor Jerry Brown is ordering a state employee hiring freeze to help deal with the $25-billion deficit.

There will be some exceptions for critical jobs. But most departments will have their full- and part-time positions frozen, along with vacant and seasonal jobs.

There will be no hiring of replacement contractors.

The governor wants to cut $363 million in operating costs in the next fiscal year. He says the freeze will continue until departments prove they can reach that goal.
