The flames broke out just after 1 a.m. on the 2500 block of Redondo Beach Boulevard.
When crews arrived on the scene, one unit was fully engulfed. More than a dozen residents were forced from their apartments.
One man was critically injured and two other adults and two small children had minor injuries.
Investigotors said they believe that unattended cooking sparked the fire.
