State assembly bill targets city of Vernon

Assembly Speaker John Perez wants Vernon stripped of its cityhood because of alleged political corruption.

The city of Vernon is one step closer to no longer being a city.

The California State Assembly has passed a bill that would revoke incorporation from cities with fewer than 150 residents. Vernon has just 94 residents, and about 1,800 companies.

Assembly Speaker John Perez, who brought the bill, says city officials have engaged in rampant corruption.

The Vernon Chamber of Commerce issued a statement saying the bill threatens jobs and revenue. It now goes to the California State Senate.

If passed into law, Vernon would become an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County.
