"Perks" help ease the pain at the pump

When you gas up at Giant Eagle, you save money on groceries -- one percent off a single cart for every 10 gallons. But when you buy groceries you can also save money on gas. Call them "perks."

For every $50 you spend on groceries, you can save 10 cents at the pump. Those dimes can add up and you can redeem them at any time up to the price of a free 30 gallon tank of gas. To get in on the deal, you have to sign up for a free Giant Eagle Advantage card.

The system has some customers planning ahead. Molly Straka says, "You have to plan a route so that you're not wasting gas." Jennifer Russell says, "I was going to stop and get gas, but then I decided I was going to drive over by Giant Eagle and get gas 'cause I can use my perks and get 20 cents off."

For Giant Eagle, the idea is to steer more customers to the pumps and steer more carts through the store.
