The Los Angeles City Council is expected to approve on Wednesday a nearly $7 billion budget that includes $54 million in cuts for the fire department.

The fire department would lose 18 fire companies permanently, but avoid layoffs and closures of any fire stations.

Last week, dozens of firefighters held a protest against the cuts, and they're expected to attend Wednesday's meeting.

The police department would also face cuts, but it is mostly through reduced overtime pay.
