Authorities said they cornered 43-year-old Brent D. Zubek on a residential roof. Police shot him in the hip before he was taken into custody. He was transported to an area hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. He was later released and arrested.
Several blocks near Ventura Boulevard and Hayvenhurst Avenue were locked down through the night after Zubek fired at officers who had him under surveillance. No officers were injured. Zubek was wanted for a Chatsworth double-murder.
The search began at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, and several businesses in the area were locked down as a result.
LAPD detectives were conducting surveillance on a female friend of Zubek's. They observed Zubek at Noeline Ave. and Ventura Blvd. During a brief foot pursuit, Zubek turned and fired one round in the detectives' direction.
Police backup was summoned, including K-9 units and air support. Area residents were warned to stay indoors during the suspect search.
Zubek was located hours later on a residential rooftop on the 4600 block of Libbit Street near Ventura Blvd. by K-9 officers. Zubek pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officers, according to the LAPD. An officer-involved shooting occurred, striking Zubek in the lower torso.
Zubek was hospitalized, treated and released. He was booked for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and a federal probations violation. He was held without bail at Van Nuys Jail.
Zubek was wanted in connection with a double homicide in Chatsworth. Two bodies were found in trash bins at a home on the 20000 block of Lassen Street Aug. 13. Police named Zubek as a suspect early on in the investigation but never revealed his connection to the two victims.
A $75,000 reward has been offered in the case.
"We've been looking for him for a week now, and we're just fortunate to have located him. We're thankful that he's in custody and that no members of the public has been injured and our officers are OK," said LAPD Detective Gus Villanueva. "The case will move forward. Now he's looking at another charge now of possibly attempted murder on a police officer."
In a twist in the investigation, the Chatsworth house where those bodies were found caught on fire early Monday morning. It is unclear what caused the fire or if there is a connection to Zubek.
