Travelers may face higher airline ticket taxes

WASHINGTON

A Democratic-led Senate panel approved the airline ticket tax increase to help cover security costs at airports. Travelers could end up paying up to $6 more for a round trip ticket.

Republicans are denouncing the plan and could kill the idea when the full committee meets later Wednesday.

The fee increase would raise $280 million next year to cover costs such as new bomb-detection machines.
