The incident happened about 10:45 p.m. along the westbound lanes of the 134 Freeway east of Buena Vista Street in Burbank.
Daniel Cukar said it happened in a split second. One moment his friend and supervisor, Don Bishop, was there and the next the 55 year old was tossed 30 yards along the freeway.
"I went over to him and grabbed him. I started to shake him to see if he could move and he wasn't moving," Cukar said.
Cukar had gotten a flat tire on the freeway and had called his boss for help. Cukar and Bishop had just finished changing the tire and were headed to their vehicles.
"As I got about half way by the hood of the truck is when I heard a real pop, a collision," Cukar said. "Right when I heard that something hit me in the head."
A car had hit Bishop as he was getting in his van. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 27-year-old driver pulled over. No charges have been filed but the California Highway Patrol said the incident is under investigation.
Cukar ended up with more than 20 stitches after being hit by flying debris.
Co-workers said Bishop was always the first to help out.
"You couldn't ask for a better brother," said Ed Aguero, Bishop's friend and co-worker. "Somebody to come and help you out, he'd be there on the spot for you."
