Wombat joeys caught on tape taking 1st steps

October 9, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
Park rangers in Australia had the chance to see the very first steps of a baby wombat, and it was all caught on film.

The video, shot by Queensland Parks and Wildlife, shows the wombat coming out of its burrow with its mother for the very first time. His steps are slightly wobbly.

Authorities are happy that their efforts to save the species are working.

Wombat joeys, as the babies are called, spend the first 12 months of their lives protected inside the burrow.
