Barricaded suspect forced out with tear gas in West LA

WEST LOS ANGELES

The man was taken into custody without further incident.

Authorities received a call from an out-of-state person who said his friend was threatening to kill himself and anyone who approached his apartment complex on Monday at 8:40 p.m. Officers responded to the 11400 block of Rochester Avenue and talked to the despondent man on the phone, but instead of a peaceful resolution, the situation escalated.

"He appeared agitated over the phone, stepped out of the balcony and proceeded to shoot several times," said LAPD Sgt. Rudy Lopez.

One officer returned fire, but it was unclear if the man was hit. No officers were injured.

The man returned inside for several hours until police forced the man out with tear gas just before 7 a.m.

Streets in the neighborhood were closed at Colby, Butler and Rochester avenues.
