U.S. Forest Service officials say the so-called Devore Fire was contained at 6 p.m. Full control of the fire was expected by Thursday night.
The fire broke out in the middle of red-flag conditions and burned on both sides of Interstate 15 at the Kenwood exit near Devore on Monday, shutting down several miles of the freeway for six hours.
The freeway reopened Monday night, but a few lanes were shut down again Tuesday morning due to a flare-up. Lanes have since reopened.
The fire also forced several residents in the Lake Mathews area to evacuate their homes. The evacuation order has since been lifted.
Fire crews continue to knock down hot spots within the fire area. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
