Person of interest named in Bell hit-run that killed teen on skateboard

BELL, Calif. (KABC) -- A person of interest has been named in connection to a hit-and-run crash that killed a 17-year-old boy who was riding his skateboard as he crossed the street in Bell.

Charles Garcia, 36, is the person of interest named in the case. Detectives said a Mitsubishi Galant similar to one seen on surveillance video captured at the scene is registered to Garcia.

Around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday, Joshua Maldonado was struck while riding his skateboard at an intersection in the 3800 block of Gage Avenue.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses said they saw the driver hit Joshua, stop to glance at his body on the side of the road and then quickly flee the scene.

Maldonado's family is pleading for the public's help.

"We just want some closure. We want to find out who is responsible for this, and we just want justice for my brother," Christian Maldonado said.

A city official said Garcia has previous DUI arrests. According to detectives, his 2000-2002 Galant likely has extensive damage to the hood, windshield and possibly a broken left window.

Maldonado's family said he was an upbeat teen who loved to explore the city with his skateboard and a camera.
