COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- Two years after the murder of her son, Tammy Bennett is still in mourning. But renewed hope that justice will be served was sparked after officials announced a $20,000 reward for her son's killer.
In April 2013, 23-year-old Iyshun Bennett was at a birthday barbecue across the street from his house in Compton when someone walked up with an assault rifle and opened fire.
Iyshun Bennett was hit once and died. His killer was never caught.
"I have good days and I have bad days and most of them are pretty bad," his grieving mother said. "We're never going to see his kids, we're never going to go to his wedding, we're never going to go to his college graduation."
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Compton City Council announced the increased reward Wednesday, which had remained at $10,000 since the investigation began.
"It's been quite the fight to get the $20,000 reward but, you know, I've never seen Compton put up a reward for anyone in years, and so for them to back my brother's story and his case says a lot and we're just very thankful," said Matthew Bennett, Iyshun's older brother.
Investigators are hopeful the reward won't be the only incentive for people to come forward with any information that can help lead them to Iyshun's murderer.
"We're hoping to reach out to, not just the idea that there's money out there, but also to people's hearts, of somebody who may have information on the case, because Iyshun was a good guy," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's detective Ralph Hernandez.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
