DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A petition is being circulated in an effort to reinstate two Downey High School coaches who organized an ill-fated hiking trip to Mount Baldy, where several students had to be rescued.
The students, parents and others behind the petition say the coaches are worth more than their mistake.
The rescue from Mount Baldy back in July is still fresh on the minds of the 12 Downey student-athletes who were rescued after going on a hike with two of their coaches, a teacher and 39 fellow athletes.
The coaches, who are also teachers at the school, have been allowed to keep their teaching jobs but have relieved of their coaching duties.
