LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- J.R. Martinez is an actor, activist and an Army veteran. He has made it his mission to ensure those who serve our country are not forgotten.
The former "Dancing With The Stars" champ is trying to get the word out about the documentary, "The Hornet's Nest." Martinez had nothing to do with the movie, but as a vet, he saw it and was moved into action.
"I just thought it was the best depiction of essentially what our service members, you know, go through, and what they experience overseas. I think it's a film that everyone should have the opportunity to watch," Martinez said.
The documentary follows two journalists, a father and his son, who chronicle what life is really like on the front line.
Martinez has been hosting screenings of the film, which looks at the Strong Eagle 3 mission in Afghanistan.
The film is on the list of contenders for Oscar consideration in the documentary category.
"For me, it's always been important, you know, my military service was cut short because of my injury but it's always been important for me to carry on service for the rest of my life," Martinez said.
Martinez said he wants to get the word out and raise awareness for the film.
"It's just an amazing film, you know, that I think everyone in America should watch," he said.
Martinez has been keeping himself busy since he carried that Mirror Ball Trophy out of the "Dancing With the Stars" ballroom.
He's currently working on a project tentatively called "Champions Among Us."
Martinez said he's had the opportunity to share his story by being a contestant on "Dancing With The Stars," but he wants others to share their stories as well.
"There's a lot of people who also have amazing stories around the world, so I want to go highlight those individuals," he said. "They may not be on 'Dancing With The Stars,' but you know what, they're heroes and they're champions in their own communities."
"The Hornet's Nest" is currently available on Blu-ray DVD and Digital On Demand.
