LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -- Authorities say fliers purportedly recruiting for the Ku Klux Klan have been found on private properties of two Long Island communities.
The fliers were found on lawns in West Babylon and Shirley along the south shore.
The Suffolk County Police Hate Crimes Unit is investigating the incident. They are looking to see if the new fliers are related to distribution in Hampton Bays in July and August.
The fliers found Sunday appeared to be from the North Carolina-based Loyal White Knights branch of the KKK. They referred to last month's shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri.
Police say the leaflets included "racist messages" and listed a website and phone number.
Suffolk County police say the recruitment flyer is freedom of speech and not being treated as a crime.
