CAMARILLO, Calif. (KABC) -- Thousands of residents were forced to flee a fast-moving wildfire, called the Mountain Fire, as it consumed dozens of homes in several Ventura County communities.

The Mountain Fire stood at 20,638 acres as of Friday evening, with 14% containment, Cal Fire said. The blaze is now moving toward the communities of Santa Paula and Somis after destroying parts of Camarillo. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The out-of-control brush fire broke out near the 7900 block of Balcom Canyon Road and Bradley Road at approximately 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The fire department initially described the incident as a two-alarm fire that burned 250 acres, but it quickly exploded due to the strong Santa Ana winds and dry brush in the region.

Schools canceled, campuses evacuated due to Mountain Fire in Moorpark

The fast-moving Mountain Fire in the Moorpark area triggered several schools to evacuate their campuses and cancel classes on Wednesday.

Chaparral Middle School-Moorpark, Campus Canyon College Preparatory Academy and High School at Moorpark College campuses were evacuated after SEC deactivated power due to high winds. Moorpark Unified School District officials said students are safe, but classes at the schools were canceled due to the power outage and fire-related evacuations.

Pleasant Valley School District also announced that Camarillo Heights campus was evacuated, and that remaining students were expected to be transported to Monte Vista via bus.

The district said child care services will be suspended earlier at 4:30 p.m., and that children will need to be picked up at that time due to staffing shortages and fire-related evacuation orders.

Moorpark Unified released the following plans for Thursday and Friday.

These schools will be open Thursday:

  • Moorpark High School
  • Arroyo West
  • Flory
  • Moorpark Preschool (Flory and Walnut Canyon locations are open)
  • Mountain Meadows
  • Walnut Canyon
  • Mesa Verde Middle School

The district said if SCE shuts off power at any of the above schools Wednesday night, district officials will notify families by 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

These schools will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 7 due to power outages:

  • High School at Moorpark College
  • Peach Hill Academy
  • Campus Canyon
  • Chaparral Middle School

All campuses are expected to be open on Friday, the district said.
