Sunken Big Bear pirate ship restored for celebration

BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (KABC) -- Get ready to walk the plank! Big Bear's popular pirate ship is back.

A replica 16th century Spanish galleon, known as "Time Bandit," that sank during a storm earlier this year is fully restored and ready for new adventures.

In March, wind, sleet and snow tipped the ship over and pulled it to the bottom of the lake. The owner of the ship vowed to bring it back in time for the 100-year anniversary of Holloway's Marina.

And he did.

"Time Bandit" usually sets sail during the summer, but this year's maiden voyage was special. Pirates of all ages were on hand for the big day on Thursday.

After a brief swordfight and the ceremonial walking of the plank, the anchor was lifted and the ship moved out.

To be sure, it was a proud day for a lot of people around the lake.

The ship got its name after being featured in the 1981 movie "Time Bandits."
