Upper Eaton Canyon trail to close over safety issues
A portion of the popular Eaton Canyon Natural Area in Altadena will be closed to public access beginning this summer, according to the U.S Forest Service.

ALTADENA, Calif. -- A portion of the popular Eaton Canyon Natural Area in Altadena will be closed to public access beginning this summer, according to the U.S Forest Service.

A stretch of the unsanctioned upper falls trail will be closed to hikers and climbers due to safety issues.

There were more than 60 rescues in 2012, and there were five deaths on that portion of the trail in 2011. The closure was agreed upon between the Forest Service and Pasadena police and fire departments.

With so many hiking options there officials say the cost of rescues in the dangerous area just isn't worth keeping it open.

The Forest Service says the section set to close is just a short stretch that leads to the upper falls, not the path to the waterfall on the lower trail. Signs are expected to be posted within the next few weeks.

People who trespass on the closed area will face fines up to $5,000.
