REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Beachgoers rushed into dangerous rip currents to save a man who jumped off the Redondo Beach pier to retrieve his kite Saturday afternoon.
Around 1:30 p.m. a 911 call came in about the man jumping off the pier. He began struggling in the water and when people pulled him out he was unresponsive.
"I sprinted as fast as I could with another guy. We grabbed him and pulled him out of the water. He had no pulse and we lifted him up onto a flat rock because the tide was coming up," witness Tom Lusk said.
Lusk attempted CPR on the man, but he remained unconscious. He was transported to a Torrance hospital in an unknown condition.
Los Angeles County lifeguards anticipate more rescues over the holiday weekend as the swell continues to build.
Beachgoers are reminded to stay close to the shore, preferably in front of a lifeguard tower, and to ask about the ocean conditions before venturing into the waters.
