Gov. Newsom is turning to the California Highway Patrol to help crack down on crime in some of the state's biggest cities by assigning them to Crime Suppression Teams.
People whose loved ones were killed by criminals gathered for an event over the weekend to honor their lives while simultaneously kicking off National Crime Victims' Rights Week.
The shootings were primarily related to typical street violence, including disputes within gangs and between rival gangs, Chief Michel Moore said.
Police have dubbed the crimes "follow-home robberies" and say their frequency has skyrocketed over the past two years.
The phenomenon, which police say armed suspects follow victims from restaurants and shopping areas to rob them, was "almost unheard of'' before last year, according to police.
