LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A fire at the Port of Los Angeles was declared extinguished Wednesday morning after more than 32 hours of active firefighting, officials said.
Fire crews remained at the scene to mop up. No injuries were reported from the blaze, which broke out around 6:40 p.m. Monday. Flames burned about 150 feet underneath the wharf at the end of 802 S. Fries Avenue, threatening boats and a warehouse at berths 177 and 179.
Firefighting foam used on the burning creosote was floating on the water and booms were set up to keep the creosote from spreading.
The fire sent up a huge cloud of smoke and forced some schools to close because of bad air quality.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District and Port of Los Angeles environmental officials have been monitoring the air quality levels in the area. They have determined that air quality conditions are safe for residents and port workers.
The terminals at the Port of L.A., with exception of the Pasha terminal where the fire burned, resumed full operations Tuesday evening.
