Lead sled appeal grows on the 'Bricks'

FLINT If you've made your way up and down Saginaw Street this week, you can't help but feel the excitement.

It's been busy with lots of people are already out cruising. They're getting the stage ready for tonight's big Flash Cadillac concert.

One thing that has been a constant all week is the noise, and it's sweet music to the ears of most Bricks fans.

There's nothing like the vroom of the engine or the souped-up style of a fully-customized lead sled.

"That's hammered, slammed, shaded, decked, the whole ball of wax," lead sled owner Mike Csintyan said.

The Michigan Cruisers have been hitting the Bricks all week, waking up neighborhoods along the route with their collection of sleds.

"I have everybody saying, hey. Thumbs up. It's cool," Csintyan said.

Dave Purdy's lime green dream is known quite simply as the Slimer. "It's a 49 Mercury. Originally a four-door, cut down to two doors. It runs good."

There's no deception about the sound, though. In fact, the entire Michigan Cruisers group thrives on living loud.

"We like the noise, and we're a rowdy bunch for a bunch of old people," said Michigan Cruisers member Debbie Peterson with a chuckle.

When it comes to the appeal of a lead sled, you could say that just about every guy wants to feel like James Dean.

"He played a big part in making the Mercury famous, and after that, everyone just fell in love with them," lead sled owner Bobby Prophet said.
"Yeah, it's got a set of pipes on there, and I use it every chance I get."

The Flash Cadillac concert begins at 6:30 Friday night. It's downtown, right on the bricks.

If you can't make it there in person, you can see it live on our Back to the Bricks special on ABC12 starting at 6:30.
