The essay should be 250 words or less and should include an official Department of Animal Services adoption application form, available at www.rcdas.org.
The essays can be dropped off, mailed, faxed or e-mailed to the department. The mailing address is 5950 Wilderness Ave., Riverside, 92504. Mailed entries must be received by Saturday, Nov. 28. Essays that are faxed or e-mailed can be sent as late at 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29. The fax number is (951) 358-7300 and the best e-mail is shelterinfo@co.riverside.ca.us. E-mail entries must have "Chihuahua of the canal essay contest" in the subject line.
Police said Nemo and another Chihuahua were dumped in a canal near Cridge Street and Olivewood Avenue. Their snouts had been taped shut.
The other dog didn't survive, but a utility worker was able to rescue Nemo. Officials said no one has come forward as Nemo's owner. A $2,000 reward is offered in the case.
