Flint police layoffs stir fear in officials

FLINT The department will have only 87 officers left, which means four or five officers a shift.

Fears about manpower bring frightening warnings from crime watch volunteers and the police union.

Wednesday afternoon, Mayor Dayne Walling reaffirmed that there's no hope of a last minute deal. A breakdown in contract talks left him with no choice.

Flint must trim millions of dollars from the city's budget, including its biggest expense - public safety.

Walling told ABC12 his administration has done everything it could.

Union leaders fear for the officers who put their lives on the line every day.

Coordinators plan to picket at 1 p.m. Thursday at the south-side mini station off Fenton Road.
