Totals an investment of $890 million and 1,600 jobs
UNDATED At the center of it all is Bay City's GM Powertrain facility.

The Detroit News reports that GM has plans to upgrade five factories, totaling an investment of $890 million and 1,600 jobs. The plants are in Ontario, New York, Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.

According to the Detroit News article, The Bay City plant is expected to receive $32 million of the investment, which will be tied to the production of GM's next generation engine for its full-size pickups.

Local officials will only say that the announcement is very positive and represents a long-term production commitment by the automaker.

In February, GM announced an investment worth over $10 million, tied to production on similar engines for the new Chevy Volt, which is an extended-range electric car.

The official announcement for the new investment will be made Tuesday morning.
